Boycott boring conferences in 2025
Conference season is almost here, and to make your 2025 kick-off event stand out, you’ve got to think differently. The current average attention span for humans is around 8.25 seconds… yes, less than a goldfish at 9 seconds!
With constant exposure to short form media, our attention is pulled in countless directions, and consumption levels are at a record high. In this oversaturated landscape your conference messaging and content needs to cut through the noise.
I’ve been to my fair share of conferences, and have planned even more, so I thought I’d share a few tips to make sure your event leaves a lasting impression.
Ensure your conference is inclusive and accessible
Inclusivity is absolutely critical and should be the first consideration for every part of your conference. This could include BSL interpreters and captioned content, adjusting slide decks to accommodate neurodiverse attendees or live streaming for remote and post-event attendees. It’s important to cater considerately and fairly for all dietary requirements, ensure your speakers truly represent a range of backgrounds and experiences, and create sensory-friendly spaces to ensure your conference is comfortable for all attendees.
Break away from the same old conference format
Let’s be real: the traditional conference setup hasn’t changed much since the 60s. But we’re in a different era now and people learn, engage, and consume information in a completely different way. So rethink your layout—ditch the rigid rows of chairs and create spaces that encourage conversation. Plan shorter, interactive sessions, use visuals that pop, and constantly consider how to keep your audience engaged, whether they’re watching live or online.
Keep it fun!
There’s nothing worse than glancing around and spotting yawning attendees, slouched in their seats, barely staying awake—it’s uncomfortable for everyone involved: guests, speakers, and organisers! That’s why it’s crucial to select a speaker who truly resonates with your audience, rather than simply picking someone you saw on TV last week. Infuse every session with energy and excitement with interactive activities that get people moving or dynamic panel discussions that tackle relevant, thought-provoking topics.
Make your conference an experience
The fun part… from the moment your guest registers to the moment they leave, think about every interaction they’ll have. What’s going to make them smile or remember your event? Whether it’s surprising entertainment, creative food options, or unique personalised moments throughout the day, make it an experience they’ll talk about long after it’s over to ensure your message cuts through the noise.
