An evening of character & curiosity in the heart of the city.

Objective

Dominus Hospitality tasked us with launching The Derby London City, the newest addition to its portfolio and part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. The brief was to create a memorable launch event that would introduce the hotel to key industry guests, showcase its distinctive character and design, and establish a strong connection between the property, its heritage inspired brand story, and its position within the City of London.

Drawing inspiration from the hotel’s architecture, branding, and unique identity, we developed the event concept “The Derby: Unlocked”, an immersive guest journey built around discovery, anticipation, and the unlocking of hidden experiences.

Solution

To build excitement from the outset, guests received a beautifully designed RSVP package containing event details alongside a mystery key. The invitation encouraged attendees to bring the key with them on the evening, creating intrigue and anticipation while introducing the hotel’s rich narrative inspired by the iconic bowler hat, or “Derby”, and the heritage of The City.

The guest experience began in the stunning surroundings of St Dunstan in the East Church Garden, where attendees were welcomed with drinks amongst the historic ruins. Taking inspiration from The Derby’s branding, we projected a bespoke leopard print pattern onto the historic stone walls, creating a striking visual contrast between contemporary design and heritage architecture. Guests enjoyed live music from pianist Patrick Keyz, dressed in a custom glitter suit and bowler hat, while our roaming character, Sir John Rycrofte, brought the hotel’s story to life through engaging interactions and storytelling.

A vibrant British spring floral archway marked the entrance to the hotel, creating a seamless transition into the property. Inside, guests could capture branded content at a dramatic draped fabric photo installation featuring The Derby London City logo.

Throughout the evening, guided hotel tours offered attendees an exclusive first look at the property’s interiors, amenities and design details. Guests who completed the tour were invited to use their mystery key at the bespoke Treasury Wall, unlocking a hidden compartment containing curated bounce-back vouchers for local City attractions, further strengthening the hotel’s connection to its surrounding neighbourhood.

The immersive experience was complemented by a live jazz quartet, a party poet and illustrator creating personalised keepsakes, and a striking “living table” performer serving drinks from a bespoke crushed green velvet costume designed to reflect the hotel’s colour palette and refined aesthetic.

Challenges

A key visual element of the original event involved large scale projection mapping onto the hotel’s exterior façade. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, this became unviable less than 24 hours before the event.

Working quickly, our design team reimagined the projection concept and developed an alternative installation within St Dunstan in the East Church Garden. By projecting the leopard print pattern onto the historic ruins, we not only overcame the logistical challenge but ultimately created a more visually impactful and memorable arrival experience that perfectly balanced heritage and modernity.

REsults

The Derby London City launch successfully brought the hotel’s brand story to life through an immersive guest experience that felt perfectly in tune with the property’s architecture, design and identity.

A key success was the strong creative partnership between our team and Dominus Hospitality. From the initial pitch through to delivery, we remained aligned on the vision for the event, allowing the original concept to stay true to the brand and be executed with confidence.

The event was extremely well received by both the client and guests, with the storytelling, interactive moments and carefully considered design creating a memorable launch for this exciting new addition to the Curio Collection by Hilton.
