the london green film festival

100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
3 months
1 planet!

Objective

Celebrating documentary film and exploring the climate crisis, the 10-day long London Green Film Festival was brought to London in partnership with the San Francisco Green Film Festival.

Held at Regents Place, this was the inaugural Green Film Festival in the city. It featured an exciting line up of films and documentaries, all sharing stories on how we can live a little more eco consciously and try to take steps in the right direction to look after the planet we live in. Entry was free and on a first-come first-served basis.

Alongside the 10 day film festival, we installed a fully sustainable Garden Bar, which, alongside the festivals big screen, ran for 3 months.

Solution

Promoting sustainability and community, our Garden Bar provided fresh vegan food during the summer, hosting everything from coffee catch ups, work meetings, supper clubs and more. We invited Biffs Jack Shack to pop up in the space for the 10 day duration of the festival, serving their signature crispy fried jackfruit burgers.

The festival was powered by 100% natural renewable electricity, provided by SmartestEnergy & directly sourced from wind, solar and hydropower projects.

As sponsors of the event, SmartestEnergy powered the large-format screen and all on-site activities. This renewable electricity commitment echoed the festival’s ethos and showcased the importance of zero-carbon energy sourcing, which Regent’s Place implemented for the wider campus all-year-round.

The screen itself was clad in old, recycled pallet boards, which then went on to become the planters still used across the campus today. Staying true to our sustainable commitments, all materials were given a second life; reused, repurposed or recycled where possible.

Challenges

It was a truly British summer, and all films were shown come rain or shine. With high wind and rain on some days, opening and setting up the garden bar (which was an open air structure held beneath a canvas tipi) was a task, as both structure and staff were exposed to the elements.

Security was another issue, it was difficult to fully secure the contents of the bar overnight, and after several break ins we had to pivot and lock all of our stock and the contents of the bar away each night in a secure locker on campus.

Upkeeping an activation for 3 months provided many opportunities for learning, requiring us to chance direction and adapt on these learnings to streamline our delivery to make sure the event was a success.

REsults

The festival championed both British and international films. It opened with the premier screening of ‘The Biggest Little Farm’– a documentary that provides a blueprint for better living and a healthier planet. The line-up also included ‘The Last Animals’, which follows a group of people who fight to save some of the planet’s last animals; the climate change doc ‘The Age of Stupid’; and ‘Chasing the Thunder’, which features conservationists chasing down illegal poaching vessel the Thunder.

Visiting the London Green Film Festival offered the perfect way to pause on a busy day and reflect on topical issues. Films were shown daily at lunch time (12.30pm) and in the evenings (6pm). Attendees lounged on deck chairs, enjoyed the Summer weather and the outdoor cinema experience. Family films including Wall-E were also shown on the weekend, offering the perfect opportunity to get children interested in these prominent matters.
